The Landsailors

 Watch Them Go....

How did you start and get the idea?

Kyle has reserved his landsailor

Landsailors are exactly what the name says. Sailing on land. Some would argue that landsailing is better that water sailing, but because I've never been sailing, I can't say which is better. One good thing about landsailors, is that you don't have to be around water or any lakes. You can sail just about anywhere there's a strong wind. Anyway, landsailors was an idea our Scoutmaster had back in 1999. He challenged the scouts in our troop to find plans for building landsailors on the Internet. We found a some free plans and began to make our very own landsailors. Almost all of the tubing came from old swing sets and old mufflers. We also used old bikes for misc tubing, wheels and handle bars. After we collected all our materials, our Scoutmaster invited everyone over to his house to build them. One boy and his dad showed up. They decided to build them anyway. Thanks to their inspiration, we had our first landsailor. The rest, as they say, is history. Our troop loved them. We had our first landsailor outing and EVERYONE loved it. The next year, we had about a dozen boys and men come to our Scoutmasters house to help build them. We had our second landsailor outing in March 2001. That's where all these pictures are from. We went to Soggy Dry lake, in California. As you can see from the pictures, we all had a great time, and are planing to do it again soon.

How can our troop build a landsailor?

Your troop can build a landsailor very easily. We did not use any special plans; the ones we had, we changed so much to fit our needs. You'll need lots of scrap metal tubing, a bunch of tires and some old tarps for the sails. You will also need a welder to weld everything together. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail the webmaster who will hook you up with the right person. Our troop has had a lot of fun and hope your troop will to.
